Up until recently, seven card stud was the most popular and widely played poker game around the world. Most people who said poker would immediately, or automatically, think of seven card stud poker and it dominated the casino tables for many years. Still popular today, especially in eastern North America, it is only in recent years, with the popularity of Texas Hold Em, that seven card stud has taken somewhat of a backseat in the poker world.
Seven card stud poker is played with any number of players from between two and seven, with each player receiving seven cards throughout the game. The aim of seven card stud is to create the highest value poker hand possible out of the cards each player is given.
To start the game of seven card stud poker, an ante and a bring-in is used. Each player then receives two cards face down and one card face up. A round of betting takes place, followed by another face up card being dealt, another round of betting and a further face up card. An additional round of betting happens, followed by the final face up card. Prior to the last remaining card being dealt, which is dealt face down, a round of betting takes place. A final round of betting is then carried out, prior to what is known as the showdown, where all players show their cards and the winner takes the pot.
The origins of seven card stud poker cannot be dated back to any certain point in time, as it is with most poker games. The time of the American Civil War is generally seen as the period when stud poker began to be a popular and regularly played card game and the forerunner to seven card stud poker.
The name stud poker is seen to be attributed to the many cowboys who played the game frequently and this can be seen in the early records of the game being cited as stud-horse poker. This game evolved into five card stud poker and was the most popular form of poker variation for many decades.
It was not until the early 1900s, when an unknown gambler introduced a variation to five card stud poker, known today as seven card stud. The rules were set and over the following years seven card stud overtook five card stud in the population stakes and soon became the most widely played poker variation in North America.
Unfortunately, for the admirers of seven card stud poker, the 1970s can be seen as the downfall period for the game. As had happened many years earlier with five card stud poker, a variation of seven card stud poker, known simply then as Hold Em, had arrived from Texas and was taking the world by storm. By the mid-1970s, almost all casinos in Las Vegas were choosing Hold Em over seven card stud poker and whilst it is still played by many avid fans today, seven card stud poker is not at the height of its popularity as it was during the early 20th century.
