To a lot of people gambling is a distant threat to their accumulated wealth that seldom troubles them; other than a Saturday night flutter on the Lotto and the annual workplace sweepstake on the Grand National serving to quench their limited thirst for adventure.
It’s fair to say many who might be tempted on a more regular wager are perhaps daunted by the seemingly unfathomable mathematics that they perceive to be integral to the steep betting learning curve; and if whose mental arithmetic skill set has never scaled beyond the rudimentary description like ours, it’s all a bit of a none starter.
Others might be warned off by the frenzied gesticulating and heavy breathing antics of those found littering a race course, the sort that communicate with one another via a series of contrived semaphore displays that would confuse those not yet liberated by the experience.
Which is a shame, as betting is a wonderfully engaging and absorbing way in which to pass time; win, loose or draw. Yes, perversely it’s possible to finish up with exactly what you started out with.
Of course, until recently great swathes of people viewed betting as all about sport and little else besides. Or possibly high finance at the other end of the spectrum. Very much seeing things in black and white. What’s more, betting has historically been seen as a male orientated endeavour, at best frowned upon by the fairer sex, at worst chastised for their preoccupation with a silent menace.
However that was right up to the onset of TV reality shows, and their emergence as a tour de force of prime time scheduling. These programmes - the talk of the workplace during runs - have provided a fascinating new element to the world of betting, and an area in which for the first time women feel comfortable playing a role in.
Ratings-winning shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, Big Brother, X Factor and I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here have inadvertently proffered a safe and inviting platform in which anyone and everyone can express their opinion courtesy of a touch button phone. And a primitive voting mechanism like this unwittingly sets further competitive juices flowing in the most unassuming psyches.
Being only a stone’s throw from putting a fraction more of your money where your mouth is, increasing volumes of women have been taking punts on the outcome of reality TV shows over the past few years, willing their favourite small screen star on past the winning post.
To make the whole betting process less taxing - and more amenable and accessible for women - is the way in which you can place a bet on your favourite weekend performer, be it of the four-legged variety or the latter day two left-legged.
The traditional high street bookies with its unique male-heavy ‘ambience’ has never surprisingly drawn in women in its droves, yet with the introduction of internet betting they have their very own safe haven. Which operates in much the same way as its more antiquated predecessor.
You choose the outcome of an event (involving a celeb/would-be celeb crooner/dancer/challenger which you feel passionately about), hand over some cash and hopefully get the amount refunded with some healthy short term interest included if you’ve followed your instinct and backed the eventual winner.
And whilst women are betting online to add to their Saturday night fun, there’s always other ways and means to capture their imagination with the flourishing gaming aspects found on leading bookmakers websites these days. Cynics may refer to it as bait, but freedom to choose (and vote/bet) is what it’s all about.
