The last thing you want to happen as a bingo fan is be out of the loop with current bingo laws and rules. I am not a lawyer so don’t take this information instead of professional legal counsel, however, be sure to understand the rules and statutes that come with conducting your own games of bingo to avoid any legal unpleasantness.
Conducting Games of Bingo
The prize amount for a single game should not exceed $1,000. The total value of any inducements offered should be limited to $250 per occasion. A copy of the bingo statutes and rules must be available if requested to any and all players. A qualified supervisor must be present during the entire occasion, such as, a lawyer or other state official. The bingo equipment must be in good working order, and prove it to all players.
Licensees must verify that the bingo balls are in the receptacle and in perfect or near-perfect condition. Witnesses are needed so this must be accomplished while in the presence of several bingo players. Cards cannot be given to the players or even present in the area until all have been paid for. Licensees cannot distribute any cards free of charge. Players are prohibited from selling or transferring cards they have purchased to another player.
Cards cannot be reserved for specific players under any circumstances. No duplicate bingo cards are allowed. The prize value and the pattern required to win must be announced prior to announcing any numbers of each game. If the ball machine is turned off, the next bingo ball to be called must be secured against tampering. All winning cards should be verified by a disinterested player. Obviously, only one winning pattern is allowed per bingo card, per game. The caller is the one responsible to officially close each game. Checks should be signed by the supervisor or another authorized officer in the organization. All players must be at least 18 years of age.
The specific types of licenses and other limitations are similar but very depending on the state in which the bingo games are to be played. It is usually considered unlawful to conduct some other type of prize type game such as a raffle or lottery within the same twenty-four hour period as the bingo games you plan to conduct, so always spread your events out over a good space of time.
